Posts: 41 06/18/09 07:29	Tags : None Long time lurker....don't post too much, but enjoy reading this forum. So....just for fun I thought I'd start a thread and see if anyone has any ideas. I always enjoy the surprisingly good "unknown" songs that people record that are NOT hits. So, to start this thread, you can't list songs like: Today I Started Loving You Again Working Man Blues Mama Tried Silver Wings..... .....or any of Merle's hits or very well known songs. Here's the challenge....go through your CD/LP collection (I've got about 30 Haggard CDs) and pick out one or two songs that really struck you as good, but never made hits. Any takers? Posts: 42 06/19/09 06:29	Ron, I envy/admire you quite a bit, because I've noticed on the other forum (UMGF) you seem to know a lot of cool country guys (betting I'm not 1/10th the musician you are, but I digress....). Anyway, I'll accept one of two of your entries, because I consider "The Farmer's Daughter" one of Hags hits. (Could you double check for me...I could swear that one was written by Merle....!) "What Have You Got Planned Tonight Diana" is a great tune - absolutely the kind of song I'm looking for. Here's a few more of mine... Better Off When I Was Hungy (written by Dave Kirby, oddly enough!!) - on Hag's "If We Make It Through December" CD. If You Hated Me - on his "That's the Way Love Goes" CD. I just think Hag is the best....so many song for so long...fabulous singer and a prolific songwriter. Most folks don't realize how many of those songs he wrote himself - no cowriting needed. Dave Kirby was a soft-spoken man who just happened to be a great guitar player (played many Haggard sessions), and a great songwriter. He has been gone for several years now, but his songs live on. "Better Off When I Was Hungry" is a great song! Good choice. Merle is one of the very best artist/songwriters who has ever lived IMHO, but because of that, it sure was hard to get a cut by him. He remains the only one of my original "dream five" who never recorded one of my songs. I got the other four! BTW, I envy your guitar stable. Ron

Posts: 40 07/12/09 10:59	Several people told me they thought i would like 'kern river' but it just never grew on me , the lyrics are autobiographical , so unless you lived it , it is not the same to you ...and the music has no guitar break in it so there is nothing for a Roy Nichols loving guitar player to do in the tune. not that it is "bad" per se' , just not up to Merle's great output ...IMHO.

"Now I live in the mountains I drifted up here with the wind...." Frankly, Hag is so good on so many levels it's hard for me to pick a song I DON'T like. (I'm 52 this year and starting to feel a lot like my dad - a little out of touch musically. When I was growing up, he didn't like much of the "modern" country at the time (Hag, Nelson...), but he fairly quickly converted after Hag put out the tribute to Jimmie Rodgers LP. He was/is a diehard Jimmie Rodgers/Carter Family fan.
